GALACTIC GRID

The Developer's Journey: Building Galactic Grid

By Chris, Lead Product & UX Architect (with Scott, Lead Data Engineer)

Why We Published This Developer Journal

When Scott and I set out at the tail end of 2024 to build Galactic Grid, neither of us came into the project with a traditional computer science background or years of enterprise software engineering experience. What we had was a deep passion for a sprawling, multi-generational sci-fi universe, a clear vision for a daily relational trivia gauntlet, and access to the emerging world of AI-assisted development—what the tech world now calls vibe coding.

Over 19 intense months, our quiet hobby project evolved from a crude gold-themed prototype into a full-stack, serverless web application powered by a custom MongoDB lore engine, a hybrid rarity calibration algorithm, and an IP-safe "Sci-Fi Neutral" aesthetic. Along the way, we fought cold-start server bottlenecks, debugged state machine loops, navigated complex Fair Use legal shields, and manually hand-crafted over 150 hours of pixel-level mobile UI polish.

We chose to publish this Developer Journal for two simple reasons:

  1. Building in Public & Educational Transparency: We want to pull back the curtain on how modern web applications are built from scratch using tools like v0, Cursor, Grok, and Gemini. If you are an aspiring founder, creative fan, or non-technical builder sitting on an idea, we hope our real-world workflow—including our mistakes, architectural pivots, and legal strategies—serves as a practical playbook for your own build journey.
  2. A Commitment to Our Community: Galactic Grid is anchored in open fan scholarship. By documenting our data provenance, our voluntary 24-hour DMCA safe harbor policy, and our deep respect for community archives like Wookieepedia, we want our players to know that this platform is built on good faith, legal protection, and a genuine love for the lore.
